Drop and acoustical ceilings for commercial spaces

A suspended acoustical ceiling, usually called ACT or a drop ceiling, is a metal grid hung on wire from the structure above, holding lay-in tiles. Offices, retail, medical and school buildings use it for one practical reason: every tile lifts out, so the mechanical, electrical and data runs above the ceiling stay reachable for the life of the building.

The grid. Standard grid has a 15/16-inch face; narrow 9/16-inch grid gives a lighter, more modern line. Tiles either lay flat in the grid or use a tegular edge that drops the tile face below the grid for a shadow line.

The tile is where performance is decided. Two ratings matter most. NRC measures how much sound a tile absorbs inside the room, which is what makes an open office less loud. CAC measures how well the ceiling stops sound from traveling over a wall through the open space above it to the next room, which is what keeps an exam room or a private office private. Humidity-resistant and washable tiles are made for kitchens, restrooms and clinical spaces.

Layout is the part people notice. We set the grid out from the reflected ceiling plan so the border tiles are balanced instead of ending in thin slivers along one wall, and so lights, diffusers and sprinkler heads land where the plan puts them. Because the same crew frames the soffits and bulkheads, the transitions between grid and drywall ceiling line up.
